Interview with Magia Alejandre. Magia and her father Francisco Alejandre are founders of the Mexican brand Taller Homiga. They create very unique handmade lamps and baskets.

Taller Hormiga is a 100% Mexican brand, inspired by Mexico and its culture. We can see the roots of this country reflected directly in their products since they are made from natural materials such as palm and mud. Taller Hormiga is an artisan brand and most of its products are handmade with the aim of creating an extremely natural environment.

Hi Magia, I am very grateful to interview you for our interior design magazine Being. Can you, please, introduce yourself?

Magia

Hi, my name is Magia Alejandre, and together with my dad Francisco Alejandre we own Taller Hormiga. We proudly make handmade lamps and baskets in Mexico.

Katrin

How did the idea of creating Taller Hormiga come to you? What was your inspiration?

Magia

Like a lot of people we got the idea during the pandemic, we already had the name a few years ago. We have always loved to create products like handmade lamps to decorate different spaces, but never really we had put it into practice. We really love natural products that are handmade. Our inspiration is Mexico and its culture and at the same time the world is evolving into a more natural way of life and that inspired us too.

Tell us a few interesting, curious facts about your brand.

Our inspiration is Mexico and its culture and at the same time the world is evolving into a more natural way of life and that inspired us too.

Magia

Everything is hand-made, nothing is massed produced and our favorite material is clay *barro.

Katrin

What is your company vision? Which place does sustainability play in it?

Magia

It’s very important for us that our materials are natural, not mass produced, and recyclable which all of them are 100%.

Our inspiration is Mexico and its culture and at the same time the world is evolving into a more natural way of life and that inspired us too.

Katrin

 Which materials do you use?

Magia

We use clay, glass, palm leaf, wicker, and linen.

Katrin

I am curious to know more about the manufacturing process. All your products made by hand?

It’s very important for us that our materials are natural, not mass produced, and recyclable which all of them are 100%.

Magia

All of our products are handmade. For example, all our clay products are molded by hand and then they burn them in a big stone oven where they dry and absorb the color. Sometimes the pieces break in the oven so we have to make them again. During the rainy season, it gets tricky to burn the clay because we can only burn it when it’s not raining.

Magia

For now, we deliver locally in Mexico. We hope we can deliver worldwide soon.

Katrin

I want to ask a personal question. Which profession did you dream about when you were a kid?

Magia

Interior Designer but I’m glad I didn’t study that and created this brand instead.

Katrin

I believe together we can change the world for the better. Do you?:) What is your personal view on the future of our planet?

Magia

I wish we could all learn how to recycle correctly. To help each other and be a real community. Return to natural non-invasive products and materials.
